Here’s a short guide to why there’s really nothing holding you back from applying to be part of this life-changing July 4-27 program, even if you’re saying, “But I can’t, because…”
Myth # 1: “I don’t speak Arabic.”
Fact: Arabic skills are nice, but what you really need for Serve to Learn are kindness, love, and English skills. If you don’t speak any Arabic, we can pair you with someone who does. People like you have had great Serve to Learn experiences.
Myth # 2: “I’ve never taught anyone.”
Fact: The best Serve to Learn volunteers are simply fun-loving and willing to mix basic English with high-energy activities. The kids are loving and want to learn from you. Those are the most important things.
Myth #3: “I’m not an expert at English grammar.”
Fact: You don’t have to be. The kids mainly need to learn things like the alphabet, new words, and “Good morning!” Most importantly, you might be the first native English speaker they’ve ever met. They’ll benefit a lot just from hearing you pronounce things properly.
Myth #4: “I’ll get lost or something.”
Fact: We’ll pin a note to you. Someone will probably read it and take you home. Anyway, Serve to Learn only takes place in areas where local Church leaders have affirmed that everything is calm and safe. And you’ll be part of a team of volunteers who’ll share experiences with you and help keep you from wandering off.
Myth # 5: “I have a thing going on then.”
Fact: Sure, you could do that thing. But when are you going to have another unique, life-changing opportunity like Serve to Learn? This could be the right time to cancel that other thing and apply now!
